Upcoming Woodstream Writing Events
While our eight-week summer workshop is full, we still have two seats open for our Mid-Summer Writing Weekend: From Soup to Nuts . . . Start to Finish.
In this two-day event, you'll join eight other writers to explore the basic concerns of short stories, memoirs, essays, poems, and book chapters. Pick the form that best suits your writing purpose, then set to work! By the end of the first day, you will have a first draft. By the end of the second day, you'll have a direction for revision.

Registration for Fall workshops is now open. All workshops listed below meet in Maitland for 10 consecutive weeks. Choose from morning or evening sessions as follows.
Monday evenings:
We will meet from 6:30-9:00 p.m. Monday, September 11th-Monday, November 13th. Limited to 10 participants, each writer will be invited to submit a manuscript to the entire workshop for review. Cost: $320 for new members; $305 for returning members.
Tuesday mornings:
We will meet from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 12th-Tuesday, November 14th. Limited to 12 participants, we will reserve one meeting for small group manuscript critique. Cost: $295 for new members; $280 for returning members.
Tuesday evenings:
We will meet from 7:00-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 12th-Tuesday, November 14th. Limited to 12 participants, we will reserve one meeting for small group manuscript review. Cost: $295 for new members; $280 for returning members.

Woodstream Writers' Latest Triumphs
Poetic Publications
Woodstream pal Julie Compton's poem "In Defense of Toll Brothers" was published in the summer issue of Mom Writer's Literary Magazine, on June 26. Mom Writer's is an online literary magazine that features writing by mothers on the ups and downs and many challenges of motherhood. The magazine was picked by Writers Digest as one of the 101 Best Web Sites for Writers. Visit the site and read Julie's poem: www.momwriterslitmag.com and scroll down to the poetry section.
And poet Laura Ross's fascinating poem "Go" will be published in Ruah--A Journal of Spiritual Poetry in August!

On May 5, 2006, DJ Norman had her letter on the immigration debate published in The Orlando Sentinel. "They did, however, edit out my punch line," she tells us!
On May 12, 2006, The Orlando Sentinel published letter-write extraordinaire Dru Tyler's letter which begins, "All Floridians--residents, politicians, developers, corporations, and tourists--should conserve water all day, every day."

Kay Adrid received some good news, recently. After a long hard day, she came home to find a letter in the mail letting her know that Greenprints magazine is going to publish an essay she wrote extolling the virtues of her garden shovel!
This is clear evidence that Kay is blessed with inky fingers as well as with her famous green thumb!
(And now, Kay has taken those lovely inky fingers right across The Pond to an AWA Writing Retreat in Strandhill, Ireland, during which she will spare an evening to meet for a Dublin dining experience with fellow Woodstreamer Karen "Blondie" Blondeau! We may be a little GREEN, girls, but we hope you're having a fabulous time!)

Make Your Writing Count
If you're interested in politics, The League of Women Voters of Orange County is interested in you! They are broadening the scope of their monthly newsletter, The Voter, to include reviews of political and policy books as well as factual, unbiased descriptions of political issues and concerns.
While The League can't guarantee publication, and all work is done on a voluntary basis, they are actively seeking items for the newsletter that can help educate their members. Submissions should be about a page in length.

The troupe performs original work at local museums, libraries, schools, retirement homes, and bookstores. In addition to performances, members meet for organizational meetings and each poet provides a service such as research, grant writing, or advertising.

Joan Mansson, Woodstream's resident artist/writer/filmmaker, sent along this about Funny Times, a magazine that publishes humorous articles and cartoons and pays for them!
"Funny Times is always looking for hilarious new material. They publish cartoons as well as funny stories. Cartoons should be 'scannable,' (good quality photocopies are fine) and stories should be about 500-700 words. Payment is $25-40 for cartoons, $60 for stories.
