Upcoming Woodstream Writing Events

. . . in Winter Park: Writing Marathon for Spring!

On Sunday, April 29th from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., we'll meet at The Knowledge Shop in Winter Park for a full-day writing experience open to all writers, all levels, all styles!

Recent Woodstream Marathon attendee Marge Clauser, "Write On!" columnist for The DeLand/Deltona Beacon, says, "The marathon writing day was one of the best experiences I've had. At the marathon I experienced a shift in my mind, spirit, and writing. I want to stay in touch with the new possibilities the day brought both to my writing and my life."

"Fresh writing, no fears!" will be our motto as writers of all levels, working--or experimenting!--in all genres, stretch their creative wings and FLY across an entire day of writing. Engaged by a treasure trove of exciting exercises, you'll wonder where the day has gone--until you see the pages you've produced!

The cost for the day, $127.00, includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, and all beverages.
For Knowledge Shop registration, call 407-671-9505 or sign up on-line at http://www.theknowledgeshop.us/.

Published, Lauded, and Applauded!
Woodstream Writers' Latest Triumphs

Novel News from Woodstream

Woodstreamer Lara Zielinsky has terrific news! Her debut novel, Turning Point, a lesbian romance, is now available through your local bookstore or you may purchase your copy now directly from Amazon.com (world-wide), Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, Barnes and Noble, or StarCrossed Productions

Genre: Lesbian / Drama / Romance

It's Hollywood. Actresses hate getting passed over. Cold shoulders are common. Petty sniping is part of the fabric of the place, but it takes two to fight, and Cassidy Hyland's birthday party for her son is about to spark much more than a truce with Brenna Lanigan, her cold costar on the television sci-fi series Time Trails.

Big congratulations, Lara! Thanks for sharing your good news.

And Non-Fiction, Too!

Tuesday morning workshop alum Terry Pappy announces that her first book, 14 Days: Loving Life with the Love of my Life, is now available. A true love story based on the author's relationship with her husband, Chuck, 14 Days reveals how the couple struggled through a six year battle with his melanoma--after only being married three-- and together what they learned about the ultimate fear.

Complemented by
Chuck's moving journal entries, 14 Days will leave readers with a greater understanding and appreciation of how precious life--and true love--is. Good work, Terry! We're proud of you.

You can order the book from www.tpappy.com or directly from the publisher's
online bookstore: http://www.authorhouse.com/BookStore/ItemDetail~bookid~40597.aspx

Short Fiction Shots

1) Julie Compton, novelist and author of Macmillan Publishing's Best Intentions, has just had a short story,"Flying Lessons," published in the Winter 2007 issue of the online literary magazine Hamilton Stone Review. "Flying Lessons" was a top 25 finalist in Glimmer Train's Short Story Award for New Writers, Spring 2000. You can learn more about the origins of the story at www.julie-compton.com; just click on the Notepad. We're soaring with you, Julie!

2) Congratulations to Woodstream Writer Alice Friedman for winning first prize in Non-Fiction in the 2007 Mount Dora Writers Contest. Her memoir "Rocks" was written in her Tuesday morning Woodstream Workshop and then "polished" at a WWW Marathon. Wonderful, Alice! What a fine, sustained effort you've been applauded for!

3)
There must be something in the water . . . . Our newest Tuesday morning hot shot, Mike Philpott, got his first publication credit with "Perk-Up," a short, short, funny coffee story, published on-line at The Coffee Bean Shop, www.coffeebeanshop.com. You can read Mike's piece at http://coffeebeanshop.com/coffee-fiction/.
Hey, Mike. Congrats! Next cup o' joe's on us!

Poetic Publications and Accolades

1) In our last issue, the Orlando Poetry Troupe invited poets to submit work for their
Annual Poetry Contest
. Now we're very happy to report that Woodstream friends and poets
took both first and third places in the contest!
The OPT First Place Winner was "Fire Balls" by Peggy Miller.
The
Third Place Winner, "Silver Impulses," was written by Julie Dunsworth.
Congratulations, poets!

And we are all invited to help Peggy and Julie celebrate their awards and National Poetry Month
on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m., when they'll be performing--along with other OPTers--at the
Orange County-Orlando Public Library,
101 E. Central Blvd., Orlando, Florida.
Call 407.835.7323 for more information.

2) Well, The Woodstream Writer, Jamie Morris, is happy to report that her poem, "Shadow--for the last Florida Panther," was published in the April 5th Weekend Section of the DeLand-Deltona Beacon. Thanks to Barb Shepherd for her support.

3) Love, Poetry, Inspiration . . . That's what the Orlando Sentinel called for when its staff
invited ten local poets to share work on their website for Valentine's Day. You can read these
works by Woodstream writers and friends--"Three Freckles," by Brad Kuhn; "Cake and Cabernet,"
by Darlyn Finch; "High Noon," by Alice R. Friedman
(poet and memoirst!); and "The Gull,"
by Robert Ross

Thanks, y'all, for the inspiration--and the love!
4) And speaking of Darlyn Finch, a well deserved congratulations to her on the publication of her first book of poetry, Red Wax Rose. Nicely enough, the following review of Darlyn's book comes from the poetic pen of Woodstream's own Peggy Miller. Yup. The same Peggy that won the OPT's FIrst Prize! Here's what Ms. Miller had to say . . .
The Comstock Review

The Critic's Pen, Reviewed by Peggy Miller, Senior Editor, February 2007

Red Wax Rose

These works are open-eyed to life's tenderness and sadness--and the intersection of tenderness and sadness, which is the source of power in Finch's writing.

A native Floridian, Finch was the recent writer in residence at Kerouac House in Orlando. Many Americans these days relocate often, but Finch lives in the midst of her history. In the poem "Hometown" she writes, "There are ghosts in the sanctuary,/ and our hometown is a place/ where we visit family/ alone/ on opposite ends of town."
You can learn more about Darlyn and order Red Wax Rose at www.shadylanepress.com

Notes in the News

Last time, Woodstream's Marilyn Sapsford told us she would be writing for the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Now our intrepid reporter reports that she had her first story online!
Cheers, to you, Marilyn! We're excited you're "on the path"!

How Now, Brown Cow?
Publishing Information, Tips, and Opportunities

1) Stories from Boys . . .

Thanks to Daphne Slocombe at AWA Headquarters who passed this along to us: The newest book in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series is Chicken Soup for the Father & Son Soul. The authors, Dorothy Firman and Ted Slawski, have sent out a call for stories. Here's your chance!

Firman and Slawski say, "In this latest Chicken Soup for the Soul, the powerful lineage of fathers to sons will be explored, through stories about fathers and their sons, step-sons, sons-in-law, as well as stories about fathers, fathers-in-law, step fathers, substitute fathers, grandfathers and grandsons. Stories will be written from every point of view, including from the vantage point of those who watch the unfolding and timeless relationship: the women who love them, marry them, birth them.

For more information or story guidelines visit their web-site at www.fathersonsoul.com

2) Our own graphic novelist, Joan Mansson, gave us the 4-1-1 on the current Glimmer Train competitions. Thanks, Joanie!

Here's what we should know from Glimmer Train, including upcoming deadlines and results:

  • Our first Family Matters competition is open through April 30. The standard story category is also open this month.
  • The spring Short Story Award for New Writers is now closed. Results will post at www.glimmertrain.org on July 1.
  • We are reading, sorting, and rereading the Very Short Fiction submissions and will post results by May 1 at www.glimmertrain.org.

3) Remember that piece about Mike Philpott and his crazy coffee story? Well, if you, too, have a coffee-related story or poem, we have a place for you to send it! CoffeeBeanShop is an online coffee shop/magazine which gives voice to the mean beans and their drinkers.

They seek thoughtful, well-researched articles and insightful fiction, reviews, and poetry on the topic of coffee--any way your brew it! Visit the site at www.coffeebeanshop.com for more info.

Well, that's all for this issue! Remember to let us know what's news,
and . . . . keep up the good work!
