Now at Woodstream: Coaching Writers from Beginning to "The End"
Bookwriting. It's a long road. Take a companion along for the rough spots. With an eye to your vision, an ear for your voice, Jamie Morris helps you keep your novel (or memoir or self-help book or short story collection) rolling, from first inspiration through final revision--and onward towards your final goal of publication.
With sharp focus and thoughtful, constructive comments, Jamie gives--most generously--guidance which reflects her depth of experience.
--Peggy Miller, poet, Senior Editor of The Comstock Review and author of What the Blood Knows

Aw, shucks.
Julie Compton cited us as an inspiration and guide in the recent interview that Mom Writer's Literary Magazine did of her. Here's the link if you want to

Woodstream Writers' Latest Triumphs
Making Book
1) Julie Compton's debut novel Tell No Lies will be released in bookstores next Tuesday, May 13th. She'll be signing at the Borders in Winter Park on Saturday, May 24th at 2:00 p.m., and at the Urban Think! Bookstore in Orlando on Saturday, June 14th at 5:00 p.m. The June 14th event falls a few days after Julie's birthday, so she's inviting everyone to come help her celebrate!
That's some happy b'day, Julie! Save us a copy, please--and a piece of cake!
Visit www.julie-compton.com for all Julie's good news.
2) Cop anthology True Blue: To Protect & Serve is in bookstores now! Also a St. Martins release (do you think St. M has been snooping around Tuesday morning workshop?) this new True Blue features a short memoir, "Brown Eyes," by our own crime novelist-in-progress Jeff Davis.
We'll see you in Borders, Jeff. You'll be the one with all the fans!
Check out the site: www.truebluestories.com.
Making News(paper)
1) Hard-working Woodstream journalist pal Karen Phillips had an article in the Sunday, May 4th, Orlando Sentinel, the Sunday Seminole (Section J), front page with three color photos and page J11 with a black-and-white photo shot!
Congrats, Karen! We'll give it a read.

2) Julie Compton just learned that an essay she wrote in her Tuesday morning Woodstream Writers Workshop, titled "Bittersweet Accomplishment," is being published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. (St. Louis is Julie's hometown and
where Tell No Lies is set.) In this lovely Mother's Day essay, Julie talks about
what success means when someone you'd most love to share it with has gone.
Bring a hankie.

3) Woodstream debutante Toni Brandt had her lovely photo titled "Birds of Healing Light" published recently in the Orlando Sentinel's Family Magazine, where it was the monthly photo contest winner!
Toni, your picture is truly worth a thousand words!
Poems, Poets, and Performances
1) Spring has been a great season for poet Laura Ross. She has poetry in or
forthcoming in Wild Violet, Loch Raven Review, The Greensilk Journal, Vulgata, The Blood Orange Review, The Smoking Poet, CutThroat, Lunarosity, Kaleidowhirl, and Muscadine Lines.
Lovely poet; lovely poems. We're so glad we get to read more!
Google Laura at Laura Sobbott Ross.
2) There's performance poetry afoot! The Poetry Ensemble of Orlando featuring Woodstream writers and pals Alice Friedman, Leslie Helpern, Estelle Lipp, Russ Golata, and Bob Osborne is back in action. Step out to hear the gang on Monday, May 19th, when they perform at Cup O' Soul on Fairbanks in Winter Park.
Visit www.cuposoul.com or call 407-647-7685 for directions.
For more information Call 407-403-5814 or e-mail blacksox@att.net
3) Congratulations to Woodstream Beat-about-Town Joe Pasquale who wow-ed 'em in the Big Apple in April when he read at the Bowery Poetry Club in Brooklyn and at NYC's "Goodbye Blue Monday" evening of jazz and prose. Joe debuted excerpts from his two new books, Liar's Regret and The CBA Conspiracy.
This Town is Blog Town, This Town is Your Town
1) And Joe P., fresh from Big Town, wants us to check out his "Poetic Rumblings Gainesville and Micanopy," the debut of his blog for The Orlando Weekly, now posted at http://www.orlandoweekly.com/blog/c2g.asp?perm=1207
2) Julie Compton's also guest blogging this week (May 5th through May 11th) on St. Martin's Moments in Crime blog. Stop by, say hello, and help her name a fictional town in her second novel! Suggest the winning name and you'll receive a signed copy of both Tell No Lies and the second book (once it's available), and you'll also get a shout-out in the Acknowledgments of that still untitled book number two.
3) Toss something on the grill at our new blog, Workshop Porkchop, where you'll find prompts and insights and questions about writing--all in bite-sized pieces. Tell us what you think about journaling, scar tissue, or synesthesia!
Let us know at http://WorkshopPorkchop.blogspot.com
4) Catherine Rain--whom Woodstreamers knows as a novelist-in-process--has launched a new web site, Midlifeventures.com (http://midlifeventures.com), a forum for women making and creating life transitions.
Share on their blog at http://midlifeventurescsblog.blogspot.com/
as well as The Three Rs (Recommended Reading & Resources). Readers can email
Ms. Rain at c3brain@gmail.com with book reviews or resources of interest. They don't pay for submissions but will post your byline and a brief bio.
Thanks, Catherine, and congratulations!

HOW NOW, BROWN COW?
Publishing Information, Tips, and Opportunities
1) Laura "Poet" Ross sends us this good tip about duotrope.com and newpages.com. Both are free databases for writers with a myriad of journals (print and online) and upcoming contests. She says these databases make it easy to access websites and submit work!
2) Stand-up poet Russ Golata invites us to submit work to Come Together, an anthology of peace poems being edited by Philip Metres, Ann Smith, and Larry Smith in the Harmony Series from Bottom Dog Press.
The editors seek poems and short prose (up to 500 words) that image peace,
nonviolence, reconciliation, compassion, and hope. They are looking for work "grounded in the world, yet positive and visionary. It can have war images, but it must also have images of peace."
Deadline is May 15th. E-mail pmetres@jcu.edu for more information.
Well, that's all for this issue! Remember to let us know what's news,
and . . . . keep up the good work!
