--------------------------------------- Published, Lauded, and Applauded! Woodstream Writers' Latest Triumphs
"I'd never written anything as fine as this when I was the author's age," said This Boy's Life author, Tobias Wolff, about 20-year-old Woodstream Writer Luke Kupscznk's short story "Jessica Johnston." Wolff critiqued Luke's manuscript during February 2nd's Master Class held in Rollins' Bush Auditorium--though "appreciated" might be a more accurate word! Read Luke's story at www.rollins.edu/winterwiththewriters and see what you think. * Paul Hiebing, novelist and nightlife aficionado, is now officially a freelance writer with the Orlando Sentinel! He has just been accepted to write bar and club reviews for the Sentinel's CityBeat's "Go Inside" pieces. (Ah, poor Paul, having to "go inside" O-Town's coolest clubs to bring back the scoop!) Look for this Woodstream Writer's work to appear on the CityBeat's website, http://orlandocitybeat.metromix.com/. Good work Paul. Have a round on us! * And two more Woodstreamers in the news: Drucilla Tyler and Alice Friedman both had letters to the Editor published recently in the Orlando Sentinel. Alice's letter decrying violence towards homosexuals was printed in February 1st's edition, while Dru's response to the question of Judge Alito's nomination ran in the "Friday Forum," January 20th. Congratulations to you both! * Well, they're not applauding yet, but . . . Jamie Morris will offer a free AWA presentation at the New Writers Group, Friday, March 17th, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Located at the Maitland Art Center, 231 W. Packwood Avenue, the meeting is part of a series--a FREE group of writers helping writers meeting the third Friday of each month. Contact Mike Whisenant to learn more: 407.538.1111 or m_whisenant@bellsouth.net . * What's your news? Woodstream Writers, past and present, share your triumphs! Write to jamie@woodstreamwriters.com, so we can laud and applaud you, too!
---------------------------------------------- How Now, Brown Cow? Publishing Information, Tips, and Opportunities
Short notice! Write fast! Borders seeks stories about pets for Pet Tails, a Borders' book due out Fall 2006. Submission deadline is Tuesday, February 28th. Complete and submit entries online--limit submissions to 500 words. Visit www.borderspetproject.com for details. * About those letters to the Editor . . . Dru Tyler notes that "each week the Orlando Sentinel asks for letters 250 words or less about a specific topic . . . a very good discipline." And, Dru adds, she "was told long ago that getting letters to the editor printed was one good sign of getting near to being publishable in other places"! Thanks for the tip Dru. * Looking for a job?? AWA founder Pat Schneider forwarded this delightful (and unusual!) writing opportunity: FREELANCE FIELD INTERVIEWERS wanted to conduct digital audio-only interviews for American version of Nick Park's U.K. animated TV series Creature Comforts. Looking for candidates nation-wide with a talent for finding local eccentrics, curmudgeons, and chatterboxes willing to share opinions on anything and everything. Sense of humor, an ear for offbeat detail and strong regional accents, and the ability to draw people out a must. For more information send cover letter and resume ASAP to:
Kit Boss, executive producer, Creature Comforts USA c/o The Gotham Group (attn: Nick Brondo) 9255 Sunset Blvd., Suite 515, Los Angeles, CA 90069 fax: 310-285-0077 or to creaturecomfortsusa@hotmail.com
Write if you get work. * Poetic Woodstream pal Summer Rodman shares 1) good news and 2) a call for submissions. First, Summer has two poems, "It's Because I Went Too Fast" and "Dream #9," in the latest issue of literary magazine One Less: Art on the Range. But also Summer tells us that One Less, which has themed issues, is calling for submissions on "film." Check it out at: onelessmag.blogspot.com. Congratulations Summer, and thanks!

While J. R Davis has been busy working on his first novel, his wonderful poem ''Shades of Blue'' has been busy, too. It's been out and about getting itself published in the current quarterly issue (Jan-March) of The Training Wheel, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's training publication. Yay! J.R!

Jeff Davis looked up from his computer long enough to share one of his friend's experiences with publish-on-demand (self-publishing) company Lulu.com. Here's what Jeff''s pen-and-ink pal has to say:
"I looked around for print-on-demand publishers, vanity presses, etc. A lot of bad deals out there! The best is Lulu.com. It's a free, publish-on-demand service. You don't pay anything to have your book published. No up-front costs, no minimum orders. Copies are printed as they are ordered, and all your costs come out of sold copies. But Lulu doesn't do any editing. They print what you give them.
"Once I got the book finalized, I simply uploaded the file. I got a chance to check it over completely later and approve the final result. They did a great job. Everything was exactly like I wanted it; the process was fast and simple."
Visit www.lulu.com and see what you think.

Daphne Slocombe, Program Director of Amherst Writers & Artists (www.amherstwriters.com) has this good news: literary agent Maya Rock is looking for new authors. Maya works for Writers House, a literary agency founded in 1973 ''with a vision for a new kind of literary agency, one that would combine a passion for managing a writer's career with an integrated understanding of how storytelling works . . . . developing the careers of novelists and non-fiction authors . . .''
Maya is looking for good fiction, especially historical. She is drawn to stories with strong heroines. She likes literary, YA, romance, memoir, self-help, inspirational, narrative nonfiction, and tales focused on people at the edges of society.
For more about Maya, see her site at Publishers Marketplace http://publishersmarketplace.com or e-mail mrock@WritersHouse.com For more about Writers House, visit www.writershouse.com.
